fl12 vs fl14

Postby tedbayrer » Tue Nov 17, 2009 4:08 pm

Hi,

I asked this same question in small boats fl12 in va, but since I have had no response I assume it was the wrong forum to ask this question, thus this new thread.

I used the fl12 plans that I ordered and recieved to lay out the fl12 on my garage floor using chalk. It seems to be a little close between the midseat and aft seat to mount the buarding handles for my sister, also once in the boat this space also seems to be very close for her prostheseis. Since I am not very good at looking at scale drawings I was wondering if the fl14 midseat yo aft seat provides 4 to six inches or more space. Is the fl14 three seats or four, if four can I leave in the frames of the seat between the midseat(rowing seat) and bow seat only and eliminate the seat.

When I finally decide on how to go forward I wll contine my thread in small boat building forum.

Thanks

You should try to avoid increasing the distance between any of the frames, doing so will allow the bottom to flex more than designed.

You can add a small ring frame between the mid and aft seat, this would then allow yo to move the mid seat forward a little. One issue with this is that there will be a lot template making and fitting of the new frames to get their new shape (when you move the mid seat frames forward they will not longer fit)

OR just move up the forward frame of the mid seat by 6". This will allow her so scoot 6" forward on the seat and you will only have to change the one frame and also the seat top will be wider by 6"

You are correct about posting questions, the small boat builders section is really for reporting you progress, this section is best for getting specific answers.

Good luck

Shine,

Thanks for the help, can I do this on the fl12 orfl14. One more question does the fl14 give me more total on board space than the fl12 or is it minimal?

Sorry about using the wrong forum before.

Thanks

Ted a ring frame is a smaller frame that adds support aft of the main frames so you can move the main frames forward. Instead of being a full 3" wide it can be smaller, but will still support the hull under the sole and the sides.

Tom,

Ok so this frame could be 1" high and twice the thickness of a regular sized frame, I am thinking I would need to make some sort of floor board to keep it flat. As I mentioned earlier would the fl14 give me more space between seats, or would I needto move seats around also.

This project is starting off to be a bigger challenge than I thought.

Thanks again-I am sure more problems will arise and will need help from the experts on this site.

Ted can't sleep tonight and saw your question. I pulled the scaled drawings and got out my architects ruler and put the pencil to the drawings I am going to give you what I came up with on sizes and then some thoughts on changes you can make.

FL12 space between front deck and middle seat 31", between middle seat and rear seat 32-33".

FL14 space between front deck and front seat 16", front seat to middle seat 29-30", middle seat to rear seat 33".

The easiest fix appears to be to move the front seat on the FL14 all the way forward so that it's back is even with the forward frame. This will give you an additional 6" leaving 35-36" between the two seats. This means no moving of frame only recutting the front seat*. You could even extend the front deck all the way back to the front frame and have a nice storage area.

Doing it this way she could sit facing forward or backwards on either the middle or front seats. Her choice. And if you made the front deck larger she could stretch out a little and lay back if she wanted. It would be about 51" long. Well crunchin' numbers have put me to sleep g'nite.

Tom

*I originally had frame here it should read seat as it does now.

Hi,

While waiting on plans, I was wondering if stainless steel or coated deck screws to attach butt joints, frames, seats, transom doubling, etc in place of zip ties after mixing and spreading resin plus wood flour glue could be used. If I can will resin stick to them while tapng seams? This question after my pk78 build and thinking it would be easier than clamps and gallon paint cans.

Just thinking.
