OD 16 - Teleflex Throttle Trim/Tilt Wiring to Suzuki Harness

Postby JBRoberts » Sun Nov 22, 2009 12:55 pm

Fellas help !! I'm stumped on how to wire my Teleflex CH7500 top mount throttle assembly trim, tilt, neutral switch and tach wiring with the Suzuki DF50 engine harness. The engine harness has nice plug ins and I didn't buy their gauges or throttle binnacle (which are all Teleflex). Here's what I have:

1) On the Teleflex:
1.1 (2) flat connectors coming from nuetral switch
1.2 (3) round connectors coming from tilt switch
1.3 (3) round connectors coming from trim switch

2) On the Suzuki Harness (looking at the owners manual):
2.1 (3) flat connectors to the Suzuki PTT (Power-Trim-Tilt)
2.2 (4) pin plug for the monitor-tach meter
2.3 (2) round pin wires which seem to plug in to the other side of the tach monitor
2.4 (2) flat connectors that go to the trim meter (I don't have a trim meter)
2.5 (3) round pin connectors that seem to attach to nothing on the wiring diagram

Questions:
1) How do I wire the 6 conectors on the Teleflex throttle to the engine harness for trim and tilt ? The Suzuki harness has only 1 3 pin connector for a PTT (2.1 above)?
2) Which wire from the engine harness (either 2.2 or 2.3 above) do I connect to my Teleflex tach gauge ?
3) Anything else I maybe missing ?

Thanks for your help....JB

JB.... I left my boat down east until after Thanksgiving or I would go out and look to try to help you out. I don't know if you considered that the suzuki tach has the engine warning lights and also serves as an hour meter. The buzzer that is in the harness also lets you know when it is time to change the oil. I don't know if using teleflex will have any affect on that or not.

Cedarock and Brian...

Thanks for your help on the wiring...I'm kinda stuck on the trim/tilt wiring, tach and voltmeter (yes I added the voltmeter from my firt thread on this) until I get some tips so appreciate the help.

I did wire the neutral switch (cut off the suzuki harness 2 wire plug and spliced my own to connect to the Teleflex) and the engine started right up ! ...so that's good news.

Brian...I see the Suzuki tach is nice but I already purchased and installed a set of nice gauges (tac, speedo, voltmeter and fuel gauge ) off Sea-Pro. If I had known the Suzuki harness had all the nice connectors I would have gone with their gauges...live and learn.

Thanks a bunch for your help and I'll wait for any tips/suggestions...JB

It's not too complicated. Each gauge will get a +12V from the ignition switch, loop this from gauge to gauge. Each gauge also gets a ground, loop it from gauge to gauge. Each gauge has one connection from the sending unit. The documentation that came with your teleflex gauges lists the color codes for most engines, and which wire to hook where. This is standard ABYC wiring, if Suzuki is standard...Gray should be tach sender, and so on...

You should be able to get a wiring diagram for that engine on the web, or from teleflex. You will have to cut off the plugs, find the right color wire, and connect each to their gauge.

Thanks Larry...this is very helpful !

My only last problem is the number of tilt/trim switches vs wires. On my throttle control I have 2 seperate switches - 1 for trim and 1 for tilt both 3 wires. On the Suzuki harness I have 1 3 wire connector which goes to the PTT switch (Power Trim and Tilt).

How do I wire 2 switches from throttle into 1 switch on harness ??? :?:

Many thanks...JB

acording to the manual you may need an inline relay

i would wire your trim tilt into the trim button and forget about the tilt button

D2 is correct. Some older engines and most I/Os use separate wires and switches for trim and tilt. The teleflex control head is made to work with either. Newer outboards just need one switch to do both, so ignore the switch mounted on the control housing (it won't be used) and wire to the switch on the throttle handle. Depending on the trim circuit current draw, you may need a relay. My Yami did not.

Thanks fellas...that does it and I should be good now.

Funny but the manual I got with my throttle from Teleflex does not have the pages where it talks about the relay and needing the extra harness ?? ALso there was no relay in the box of parts. So...I'll guess I'll wire it up without the relay harness and see what happens.

Hopefully this is my last Help post and next time I should have pictures with the boat on the water under power...if it doesn't get to cold up here !

JB,

D2 and Larry are right, just wire up to the trim switch. Also the wiring diagram shows trim down as pink but everything else as Larry has shown. I spoke with one of my dad's mechanics and you should not need a relay either. Hope this helps.
