I'd say his trip will probably be complete then 8) The yellowtails and blue runners are plentiful, but we should also be able to find some school dolphin that will eat those flies. If the weather allows getting outside the reef there ain't no telling what he might catch.

The "Catch 22" reported 47 sailfish landed in 1 day off of Duck Key in 180-200' :!: That was the first of this week. With good weather your GF18 can fish there.
Completed GF12 X 2, GF16, OD18, FS18, under construction GF18

Glad I'm not the only overly excited person about this trip. I have amassed a bunch of bass pro shops cards, and I am planning on taking a stop on the drive down from Miami. I'll probably grab a good rod/reel combo and some other tid bits. If anyone needs anything I can probably grab it.

Will

As an aside I was thinking this combo with 60-80 lb braid would be a great all purpose rod/reel. Any feedback?

And I get to play with them first   I'll be like a kid a Christmas when those get here :!: Peter didn't fool around 8O

Will, I really like my Shimano Baitrunners. I'll be bringing 2 of them. You've even fished with them. I don't know about the Oceanmaster rods.

I thought that's what you had, and that's why I was looking at that reel. I may just buy the reel, and get another rod to match better. We'll see.

Please do so! they have to look like used when I bring them back, so it doesn't look like I bought them there. Also try to put some wear and tear on the bazooka case, maybe you can put on some tournament decals from earlier years? 8)

I'm getting more and more exited everyday about this trip 8) If you stop at bass pro take the one in Ft. Lauderdale it's a nice big store, great restaurant and there's also a quite interesting fishing museum on the site.

Cool he's going to have a blast. Now all he has to figure out is how to throw an 8 weight.

Real good news, don't know if I have the right tackle for that. Will 70 series spinning tackle with 75lb braid handle this kind of action? I bought them for the POC trip last summer and never saw a Tarpon, they were rigged and ready to go if needed.

Absolutely. Atlantic Sailfish are not real big, usually well under 100 lbs. Even under 50. Standard sailfish tackle in the Keys is 20-30 lb and spinning gear is common. Anything that can handle a grown tarpon will easily handle a sail, wahoo, or tuna. Goliath grouper and full grown sharks on the other hand, will need Doc's FinNor 8O

Fishing in the Keys is so varied, it really just depends on what you want to fish for. Nice and easy, mangrove and yellowtail snappers and even small dolphin will do fine on 12lb. spinning tackle. Or, you can monster fish 8) I bring something for everything

Cool, didn't know if we needed to mount a fighting chair in my GF18 and get one of those five gallon bucket rigs. :D The trouble with having all that stuff on your boat is you have to have a, bikini clad, gal to pass out sustenance to the guy fighting the fish, I don't think SWMBO would understand those pics.
Do you guys know what kind of bait Sailfish like? And what kind of Sabaki rigs, color??
Although I can hear my Bass Pro card screaming, I do appreciate the information.

These are blue runners, primo sailfish bait. We chum them up and catch them on a sabiki rig. Color doesn't matter much with sabikis. I usually use pearl. Most of the pros will slow troll with live bait and kites for sailfaish. Blue runners, live ballyhoo, goggle eyes, mullet all work.

Sailfish also hit a wide variety of trolling lures, and rigged ballyhoo, with or without skirts. They like a lot of surface commotion and I usually troll with a couple of daisy chain teasers tied to the stern cleats, plus a string of birds with baits behind them. I've even got a spreader bar with 36 plastic squid on it  The object is to attract the sail up to the boat, get it fired up, then toss it a bait with a hook. Once they fire up, the bait won't matter much.
