Questions about plywood for FS14_LS

Hi,

I have some questions about plywood for FS14_LS.

I´ll build it in Brazil and there isn´t a certified marine plywood manufacture here. Even the wood species are different.

Just a few companies sells the Marine grade plywood made of traditional wood used in wooden boats (bare wood) called Cedar (not the same Cedar of North America).

Just these plywood sheets costs more than all other materials needed to build the boat, including plans, fittings and a fish finder!

Looking at local boat building forums, local builders are using in composite boats marine plywood made of tropical woods and WBP glue.

I found this type of plywood made of tropical woods (inside and outside) and WBP glue that have one face A grade grain and the other with B or C grade with some places with small gaps with filler. No voids in the middle.

This plywood+6oz woven+resin it still costs 2/3 of Cedar plywood…. 8O

So, what is the concerns about using not a marine certified plywood? How can I test it before build the boat in a simple way? The filler in grain will break when bending it?

Thanks!

Carlos

Carlos, I ca not tell from that label.
Pick a plywood that uses WPB glue (almost all do), is made from a rot resistant wood specie and in which all the layers are made from the same wood.
Watch out for woods that have nice wood outside and cheap stuff in between.

@ BB Sig
Thanks for the link, I´ll test the ply as described next week. I just saw the post about the meet, looks awesome have a lot of builder and boats in the same place! We don´t have such thing here, just a few people build boats, most buy crap aluminum boats. Thanks for the reply!

@ Jacquesmm
I know label don´t tell so much. I´ll call manufacturer for more information about it. Website says 100% tropical woods, but how knows. I´ll also test it.

We have a lot of this plywood for furniture making with good faces and bad wood inside, I´m just trying to find good stuff ! Thanks, for the reply!

Best test and easy is to take a piece and put it in some boiling water. If it comes apart then you know.

Hi there,
Different boat, same country and same questions over here. I'm going to build a 13ft sailboat and only furniture plywood is available around here (Jaboticabal / SP city).
Have you got any conclusion?

Regards

Same answer: get the best plywood you can find.
You can always get a new outboard, new accessories etc. but you can never replace the plywood.
Look for a plywood with exterior glue, no voids and made from wood that has some resistance to rot.

Thanks for the answer jaquesmm. I would like to know in fact which was the "best plywood you can find" for csotelo here in Brazil. May be I can get the same material for my project.
