Re: Four coats of sterling, and still can't get it right

I happened to let it sit for over 45 minutes last time. The sides are fine, and i'll leave them alone. I am going to do some wet sanding to remove some of the larger brush marks & imperfections on the top, and try & re-do it next spring. For now, we just want to get out on the water. I'm also painti...

Re: Four coats of sterling, and still can't get it right

I've been limited to doing one coat per weekend, so I have been sanding between coats. But I thought about the bug droppings or other contamination you suggested... it's possible I wasn't cleaning well enough, especially after 5-6 days inbetween painting. It's not an open bow, and those craters are ...

Four coats of sterling, and still can't get it right

SO - I've done FOUR coats, and I'm still not happy. From brush marks to bubbles, I can't get it right. The first time, I didn't have my make-shift booth clean enough & weather tight... dust and bugs were everywhere. And lots of visible lines where new paint met 5 minute old paint. And the shiny surf...

Re: alternative to Sterling Brushing thinner?

Thanks Crakcer Larry - you're probably right. I also realized it's not just the $$$, but the time/labor as well. But since I had time on my hands, I went down to West Marine anyway and and bought some interlux 2333 brushing thinner & did a small patch on a practice board I've been using. It looks o....

alternative to Sterling Brushing thinner?

It's Sunday afternoon, finished my 2nd coat yesterday, and I ran out of brushing thinner. I really want to get this last coat on today! Is there an alternative/substitute I could use? There's a West Marine in town, maybe they'd carry something suitable from Interlux or Awlgrip?

Re: small amounts of S3 paints, 5 oz cans.

thanks, all. I just realized I have plenty of fiberglass, resin & primer left - I should whip up a sample board to practice on.

Re: small amounts of S3 paints, 5 oz cans.

Is the S3 compatible over other LPU paints? Ithought I had seen a thread covering this, but can't find it now. Want a 3" stripe around a 17' boat painted w/ Sterling... hard to justify $100 for a quart of Federal Yellow.

S3 Primer - first cost late in the day, got wet overnight

Yesterday afternoon, at about 4:45 I rolled my first, very light (but not diluted/thinned) coat of S3 primer, temp was approx 75 deg & not humid. Let it dry 2 hours, then applied a 2nd coat, temp was still over 65 deg. It was a nice, hot day and I thought the 2nd coat would be fine. But this morning...

Re: methods/products to bedazzle a boring paint job?

I was thinking 3 diff colors to mix... Maybe I'm asking the wrong question - can you get Sterling (or any other 2-part LPU) tinted?
