Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

An update on my fuel issues. Previously I had checked fittings/clamps, left the inspection plate off of the top of the tank compartment for it to air out for a month, with no effect. As soon as I put the inspection plate back on the top of the tank compartment and left it for a day, the fuel odor wa...

Re: Fuel tank install

When I tested mine I adapted an air fitting to the vent hose, installed the fuel fill fitting on the fill hose (it sealed quite well) and put a gauge in the line at the outboard. I then isolated the air system and let the system sit. I've read somewhere that 3psi is the uscg test pressure, and teste...

Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

Fallguy - I talked to the folks at Sierra/Shields about shields fill hoses and they said that they were not meant to be left with fuel in them. But they do have a hose for 'inspected' vessels that would be a good choice. A sort of universal hose (gas, gasohol, diesel, water, wet exhaust etc) that is...

Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

Fallguy -thanks for your input. I'll switch the clamps around and try that. Don't know why I did it that way as I know better. No salt water and only a few hours usage on the tank. I was out in my shop last night scrounging for additional conduit to raise the conduits closer to underside of the deck...

Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

Tom - the fitting is a second pickup into the tank. The tank can be used for diesel and either fitting can be used for a pickup or return. I've checked that one and it seems good. I won't really be able to tell until I do a pressure test of the system. Orangequest - That was an old picture from cons...

Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

OrangeQuest- great thoughts on this. Hoseclamps seem good. Can't twist hoses on fittings at all. here is nothing to stop me filling up the fill hose completely if filling by portable gas can. Hadn't thought about the auto shutoff at a gas station limiting the amount of fuel in the fill hose. I check...

Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

I have just got off the phone talking to the Trident folks who make my fill hose. I talked to a tech person who said that my problem is likely the hose itself. I described my installation and he said that the hose permeation would do it when there is no venting of the compartment. The hose is not su...

Re: HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

Thanks folks. There was no sign of dampness/liquids when I checked the tank fittings and hoses but the leak may have already occurred. Perhaps all I'm seeing is the results of the leak and the fuel level is now below where it was leaking. I'll watch to see if the fumes keep diminishing. Looks like v...

HMD 19 Fuel Tank problems

I've recently come across a problem of a lot of gasoline fumes in the compartment that holds my fuel tank. I wouldn't have noticed it but I hadn't sealed the conduit that had the fuel gauge and ground wires going through it and it was open to the cabin. The fumes were such that no electrical was tou...

Re: hull strength

Hopefully these pictures help make some sense of my previous reply. It may help to know that I had already installed the seatboxes etc on the designed floor and then later cut out the approx 24" wide opening in the floor between the frames and installed the lower floor. I believe the pictures will g...
