Fairing Mistakes

I'm building a FL12. I have no prior handy-man, wood-working or fiber-glass knowledge.or knowledge So after first attempting to do some fairing I then hopped into the forums to find answers to the questions I had. I'm using 6mm and 9mm C/D un-plugged general purpose ply, 45/45 6-ounce (not 100% sure...

Re: Butt Block Problem FL12

I can't believe that your plywood is worse than what we used but either that is the problem or then, you pulled very hard while testing the panel. Your post says that you just lifted the part, it's strange. Could it be that, by accident, you glued the side panel to the floor? The piece was not glue...

Re: Butt Block Problem FL12

From whats been said it seems my failure to get any glue between the two panels likely led to a localization of stress at the join. It looks like the butt block wood failed. You used a 3 ply thinner butt block, than the 5 ply wood for the boat. You should always use the same size butt block as the w...

Re: Butt Block Problem FL12

What is the purpose of the initial epoxy coating?
I applied the glue straight after the initial epoxy coating, what is the benefit of allowing it to soak in first?

Re: Butt Block Problem FL12

OK, I shall post a pic when i get home. Also, in the stitch and glue tutorial. The consistancy of the glue shown look more like what i would attribute to a filleting mixture (ie peanut butter consistancy, though it is hard to tell). Is this correct? I used more of a 'tomato sauce' thickness, I did c...

Re: Butt Block Problem FL12

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes.... um... the wood i used. Unfotunately i'm unable to put up a photo right now but will later. I've used 6mm ply for the side panels and the butt blocks are cut out of 9mm ply. Both are CD grade, not sure of the wood type. From memory i believe the failure was in th...

Butt Block Problem FL12

Hi, I've recently begun building an FL12. I got my pieces cut and glued up the butt blocks to the sides and bottom and also the all the battens to the seats. I left them for a few days until last night where I entered my garage ready to stitch the sides and transom together. I gave one of the side p...
