Re: 1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

I realize we have not calculated anything yet but assuming we go with the six layers of 1708. Would you recommend all six layers then glass in the stringers? Or, let's say 4 layers and then glass the stringers in counting the last 2 layers up and over the stringers??

Re: 1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

I had two reasons for using LVL: 1. Grain all goes fore-aft, 2. I can get a continuous piece 13 feet or so long. If I go 4 x 8 sheets of plywood, I gotta splice it, is that OK? Since this will be done in all-epoxy, wouldn't 1700 biax (no matt) be specified in lieu of 1708 (with matt)? I'm confused b...

Re: 1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

We are going forward and rebuilding this hull. The core is removed. The balsa was damp and/or rotted all the way to the tip of the bow. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m178/rustnrot/Cobalt%20GT500/coreremoved.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m178/rustnrot/Cobalt%20GT500/almost_there_2.jpg F...

Re: 1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

I have gotten nearly the left side completely stripped of the core. I'll post pics when I get it ALL cleaned out. Here are some factory photos. The second is a Donzi but this is a near-exact splash. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m178/rustnrot/Cobalt%20GT500/CobGT500Cropped.jpg http://i104.photo...

Re: 1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

For now, let us take out some more of the inner glass and core and see what we end up with. We'll get back to you.

Re: 1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

The piece that broke off is actually a piece centrally located in the bottom where a crow bar went thru prying off the core.

1969 Cobalt GT500 Hull

This boat is a splash by Cobalt Boat Company of a Donzi Corsican built at the same time but this hull is laid up differently. It is 18 feet long, 7 feet wide and will be powered by a 310 hp efi Ford V8 and have a Pulse Drive surface drive installed in lieu of the outdrive installed originally. The f...

Thanks Jacques, I will post again after I have disassembled portions of one or both stringers. I will leave you with one final thought. On one of the pics you can see a recess where the factory mounted some stainless steel trim tabs. These tabs filled the recess exactly and did not extend rearward o...

The white you see is poor secondary bonding of cloth tabbing that was used to mount the gas tank cradle. I have seen no evidence of poor stringer bonding. However, if I am going to remove the rear 1/3 of the stringer I may as well remove (and reuse) the whole thing. I would assume you would recommen...

1972 Chris Craft XK18 Engine Mounting

I am "restoring" a 1972 Chris Craft XK18 18' boat which started life as a jet boat. Factory photo is shown. I am retrofitting with a used Pulse Drive surface drive and Toyota 4.0L ski boat engine as opposed to the 454 Chevy and Jacuzzi jet drive it had originally (I got the hull with no engine and a...
