The S3 topcoat (with crosslink) says to wait 14 days before floating. How long before it can be safely trailered without damage.. Don't want bunks cutting into my pretty paint :) I'm in a garage.

Repainting Hobie 16

Any guesses as to how much primer etc to repaint an old Hobie 16 (red which I know will take an extra topcoat)?? I am rebuilding her after some years of neglect so the original gelcoat/finish is shot. I'll need some highbuild primer as there will be a fair amount of "repair" area. EDIT: I should add...

Re: Bilge keel on Vagabond 20

No question, a completely different animal. Asymmetrical foils, retractable at that. Canting keels. Movable water ballast. Enough canvas to outfit several boats - completely apples to oranges. But it causes the mind to pause and consider the possibilities. Is there some improved compromise we have n...

Re: Bilge keel on Vagabond 20

While it is inappropriate for the VG-20 to consider these (bilge keels) - to throw a fly in the ointment - don't open 60s have what could be considered a very modern rendition of "bilge keels". They have daggerboards offset to the sides and angled, drive through the hull very much like bilge keels. ...

Wow!!!!!! 600+lbs - did I read that right? The scales MUST be wrong. There is NO way Douglas Fir, glass all around and your mods add up to that much weight, no way. I figured in the 450 neighborhood at the very most but 675!!!!! Nope, gotta be the scales.

Looked at hunterdave's site and this thing never got finished I imagine.

But, having been out of boat building a few years, I think this is the perfect project for me and my kids --- we started yesterday but it is SO hot that we did not get far. Will post photos as we move along.

Been out of boatbuilding for few couple years (about to start back) but have you tried Suwanee Lumber, a bit out of the way for you but I have had really good luck with them in the past. I doubt they have douglas fir as it is uncommon here. I would ask what other species are acceptable for the desig...

Working on the photos, did not have my digi with me when I went up there this past weekend to look at it. I am expecting to have to cut the mount area out and rebuild it.. But I will get you some photos (and I meant to include that in the initial post - sorry 'bout that).

Carolina Skiff 16

Hey folks, long time - no posting :) A buddy of mine was recently gifted a 16 foot Carolina Skiff. She seems in fairly decent condition outside of the transom. It has a 25 HP tohatsu 2-cycle on the tranny. After rebuilding the fishing deck (something else I know nothing about :) ), what is left is t...
