You will get a lot more bang for your buck with stringers or bulkheads. If it were me that is how I would do it rather than just adding more glass.

I would go ahead and get the wood off of the glass skin and then leave it until the spring. You are going to need to grind it right before installing the new wood anyway so do it then.
