Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

Sorry for going silent, all. Figured you didn't need every single "got one more coat of paint on" post so I just went to town and work steadily. Able to do one coat of primer or paint per night, and then once all that was said and done, it was time to refit everything. I also used some scrap wood (o...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

Final coat of epoxy hardened nicely while I was in the Bay area for the weekend. This pic is before sanding. The dark areas are a thin guide coat of black spray primer, under more epoxy (looks clear because of gloss -- it's got woodflour in it). Ran out of balloons after doing the center part so the...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

Just checking in. No pics to share -- just been filling and sanding. Not trying to make it perfect (since the rest of the boat is not smoot/fair) but don't want pinholes or visible glass weave if I can help it, as they will collect crud and mud. It would have gone a lot faster if I had been a lot mo...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

I cut all tape to size , lay them on top of each other on a plastic sheet ,combine total lenth and mix 1 OZ epoxy for each foot of 12 OZ tape and wet them out all at once . Use a plastic squeege to take off excess epoxy before putting tape on the joint. put each layer on with a 4" foam roller and y...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

That looks better. In the previous pictures, I did not see the glass going over the corners. That's 'cause it wasn't on yet. You had me worried there for a while! warm your expoxy to 75 degees or so - I set the containers in front of a space heater before mixing thinner expoxy is much easier ...

Jaqcues, is this more of what you are looking for? :) https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8860/17916167612_cd47c90946_c.jpg https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5441/17731637590_69656a6c36_c.jpg I did find that my fillets from last night were too small and the 12oz glass wouldn't stick in the corners. So ...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

You have to go up with the fiberglass. The same tape or piece of glass must go from bottom to the brace, vertically. Same at the transom. You must cover the seam, cover the two parts. I certainly plan on it, unless I'm misunderstanding you? :!:  I just had to quit last night after gluing the p...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

Some photo updates. Last night while working I ran a small space heater in the boat to help accellerate things a bit. It got the temp up to about 75 in my working area and really helped things tack up between batches. The Epoxy Station, color coded to help prevent bonehead moves. So far, so good. ht...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

For corners, we have a profile sander but it is far from perfect. The best way to handle that is to avoid making a mess in those corners. Cracker Larry suggested using small light bulbs to shape putty in the corners. I use tongue depressors and then brush over the putty with a coat of resin but on ...

Re: 1976 16' John Dory repair/resto/mod

Well, the UPS truck is out for delivery with my box of BBC goodies. I'm about 99% done with the grinding (got cut short by rain last night) but am ready to do some glue-up of the knees and filling of some holes and low spots. I ordered the slow hardener. Tonight's low is going to be 36 8O and it loo...
