Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

All of the Gradys I have owned had one length of PVC that ran from the forward bilge to the aft bilge with no openings into the fuel tank compartments. The tank compartment then had a separate drain to the aft bilge that was plugged with a standard rubber bilge plug. That plug remained in place all...

Fuel Tank Questions

Thanks to all for your suggestions and comments about drilling oversize holes and then epoxy. Transom installation is still in progress and will post some pics shortly. Moving on I finally removed the fuel tank. Had to remove 1/4in all the way around on the fiberglass to lip. Other than that it cam ...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

Paul, Jacques may have a different answer but on your engine mount holes I would not drill 1 1/2" hole for a 1/2" bolt. What your looking for here is a skin of epoxy to protect your transom core from any possible water intrusion into the bolt hole. A layer 1/8" to 3/16" should be plenty. I would dr...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

The answers are in our tutorials. Give me until tomorrow to find them and I will post links but: - epoxy putty for the oversized holes - stiff putty will stay in there. - for large holes, we make some small glass pieces around a PVC pipe mold - Yes, it is strong enough. Any luck with the links to t...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

I needs some clarification on the following please.... .... when installing the scuppers and anything the creates a hole in the gel coat from the outside is it best to pre drill out the holes larger (twice as larger) and fill with epoxy and then re drill the correct size, such that if the screw or b...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

Its been a busy week and had some computer problems at home and not been able to get on here for awhile. Progress update. Laminated the 3 layers of plywood together. Installed in boat with glue, clamped in place (not too much pressure) and just enough to see glue coming out. Installed putty around t...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

The weekend weather was not the best so did not get a lot accomplished. Still have some fiberglass grinding to do on the transom and will be ready for reconstruction shortly. Having said that I have a few questions regarding the instructions I was given. They say "the only stupid question is that on...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

That is good. I actually cut the stringers further back as recommended so that should also assist installing the transom plywood. Cracker Larry, I have been reviewing your pics of the 27' Sea Ox that you sent me a link to. When cutting/drilling holes for scuppers did you do that after installing the...

Re: 1981 Grady White 240 Offshore - Transom Replacement

I forgot that you kept the cap on. We have a good number of Grady Whites transom replacements on this site! because of the flare of the sides, the transom is wider at the top and it is almost impossible to push a new core in straight. Try what you propose with cardboard template, you may be able to...
