Re: Can the TX18 be built with PVC foam Core?

Thanks topwater, because of where we are based and the questionable quality of any wood / ply, as well as the costs and logistics, we would ideally like to go the foam core route. I did think the weights might be heavier than the ply version, but this is not a concern at this time. Hopefully when Ja...

Re: Can the TX18 be built with PVC foam Core?

Thanks for the great input Fallguy. As I have been delaying so long glassing my TX18, the initial thought was to use my hull on its jig as an internal mold and lay the foam over it. Alot of time has passed, and I have added rub rails to my hull, so that idea is out the window. The next idea would be...

Re: TX18 for the Florida Keys

Thanks very much for the heads up Fall guy! I will take this onboard.

Chris, I have put a few pics in my album, so you can see the progress so far. Being my first build I am sure I have made a good few mistakes, hopefully there will be some comments putting me right.

Re: TX18 for the Florida Keys

Hi Chris, I would agree whole heartedly with Browndog, if you have access to the CNC kit then take that route. This is the first time I have worked with wood and or Glass fibre, and am finding it very enjoyable. The jury is out on glass fibre though, as I fear that will be a very steep learning curv...

Re: Can the TX18 be built with PVC foam Core?

Hi Fuzz, thanks for the response. His fear is based on wood rot, and resale value in the future. From my reading online it will be more costly in glass and might even be heavier. Hopefully JM will pick up this thread and pass on his advice.

Can the TX18 be built with PVC foam Core?

I am currently building a TX18, and a friend is interested in building one too, is it possible to do this with PVC foam core instead of plywood? Where we live it would actually be cheaper to buy the foam core than marine ply. Specifically Gurit PVC Lite 80kg/m3.

Re: TX18 for the Florida Keys

HI Chris,
I am in Zambia, and building my first boat, a TX18. As I write this, the hull is ready for glassing, which I should begin next week. Not sure what you would like to know, but happy to share what I can.

Re: Texas Sled - Gunwale width and Console Location

HI Dave,
Would be great to see your build if your coming through Lusaka. I have fished 3 trees, Lukulu, and Senanga, mainly for bream, but also some very good tiger. Have sent you a mail, so just check your junk mail.
Cheers, Clint

Thanks Browndog, I was a little worried about reducing strength, but comfortable now.

Re: Texas Sled - Gunwale width and Console Location

Hi Dave, Nice to meet you. I'm in Lusaka. Born here too, college in G/town, so came thru PE alot. Some good fishing Mongu and Senanga last year. I haven't been for a few years, but its time to make time. Glad to hear the TX18 is doing well. I'm impressed its going offshore, I thought the low sides w...
