Re: Wood grab bar

Hi Richard, I have seen it before but never so well documented from scratch. You know I build a grab bar for my FS13 which looks ugly as sin. But this post of You made me decide what to do this coming Winter and hopefully I can get near your perfect grab bar. I will give it even a separate name to ...

Re: Wood grab bar

I was wondering how you glassed that thing more than anything. If wood gets wet; it likes to move. I habe a couple marine ply things no glass on my skiff and they are opening up on edges. I wonder if you could have made it with 3/4" coosa... Obviously, not as stiff, so maybe more carbon. I wondered...

Re: Inside radius sanding

Be neat as possible with the inside corner fillets. Mix very small batches of quick fair so you don’t get in a hurry. Remember, if you don’t make a mess you won’t have to sand off a mess. I like tiny silicone baby spoons and hand trimmed bondo spreaders for inside corner fillets. Kind of like trying...

Re: Wood grab bar

Here are the final details. After the deck went was glued in, I routed out the socket holes with a bearing bottom bit. 674F53EB-11DE-4E18-8DE8-4578D85E6430.jpeg This is the best photo I have of the finished product. The bar is very stiff and I’d like to think unbreakable. I faired the grab bar with e...

Re: Wood grab bar

Thanks guys. 8) Carrying on with details.

Covered the grab bar with a carbon fiber sock and epoxy. Used tape and a non-stick sleeve to tighten up the cf sock at the arc of the bar.

Used a 3/4” rounding over bit to make a round bar. So in essence, you start out with a 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” square rail.

Wood grab bar

I got a pm request for some intel on how I built the wood grab bar on my son’s boat “Bare Bones”. It may take me a bit to dig up the photos, but here we go. I’m fortunate to have a cnc, but parts can be cut out with jigsaw. 85564855-94C3-4DF4-AB88-B7EA8A1E0B2F.jpeg C25B96B4-6D51-40A0-A729-93C5D85720...
