Re: Double Ender Grand Canyon Dory

Very impressive and interesting build. What rivers are you planning to run?

Re: Jaysen's Mini 580 plan

I'm assuming you won't have an HF radio but if you can have a shortwave radio you can get the time to check your clocks. As to sight reduction, I agree with Jacques, as usual: using a calculator is not keeping the spirit of celestial navigation. He says he didn't use stars and that is pretty normal,...

Re: AIS/VHF antennas

The price I mentioned earlier for the ICOM 7300 is apparently not a marine radio. Their M802 is about $1900 at West Marine, but double that at Amazon (??), and perhaps that's what you were looking at earlier. I found this link, advice about buying a high frequency radio. Worth a look just for genera...

Re: Jaysen's Mini 580 plan

Great to have Jacques weigh in. This boat is very, very small for ocean passages as he says. I, too, would be worried about space and weight for spares, provisions, and water. Even heavy cruising boats are rarely not sailing below their lines when provisioned and fueled; yet the food for one person ...

Re: AIS/VHF antennas

In regard to rescue, your best bet is to have an EPIRB, not just a radio.

Re: AIS/VHF antennas

Here's a rundown on that. Wasn't available at anything like common folk prices when we were out there.
Of course most marinas now have wireless you can log in to but I'm assuming you mean at sea.

Re: AIS/VHF antennas

I would only use the ssb for a backup/emergency radio if we had no comms far away. Look into the GMDSS licensing for this. I don't recall having to get this license, but that may have been because I had a HAM license? Also, look into 2182 here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2182_kHz My experience w...

Re: AIS/VHF antennas

OQ is correct about that; HAMs are often really helpful and one of their core beliefs, I think, is self-reliance. So fixing radio gear is right up their alley. Problem is, you'd be somewhat more likely to be welcomed into their good graces if you had a HAM call sign. A tech license isn't too hard to...
