Instead of rope, a top rail of tubing that fits in a socket at one end, is secured by a pin through an open top socket at the other, and has a convenient boat hook built into it. Thanks! The top rail idea is something I thought of too but, again, too expensive. I may come back and revisit the lifel...

I was even thinking of maybe tieing it to the cleat Well, then you'll need another cleat to tie the boat up or else find a tangle every time you cast off. Also, that wouldn't give any support to someone sitting in the back--for example, the guy running the engine! How bout a taught-line hitch?

The lark's head like you have or even splicing the eye right to the cabin padeye works for one end. But the other end has to be tensioned and I'm a bit embarrassed to say I can't think of a pretty knot to use. A trucker's hitch would be too much junk. I guess a round turn and two half-hitches would...

I’ve decided to scrap the nylon lifelines in favor of rope. It should work just as well and I think it looks a lot better too. Still working on it but here is a mock up
