DAYTRIPs Bertram 28 Strech

Questions about boat repairs with our resins and fiberglass: hull patches, transoms and stringers, foam, rot etc.

I would love it if you will give us a master class in hatch building :D
Ditto.

What I struggled with is deck integration. I glass taped the deck to the gutters, but the requires fairing. Pita.

My gutters are also probably a bit shallow and will need more than one drain.

My boat build is here -------->

Got the center section of floor down. Basically covers the tanks. Put 1 1700 on the bottom. Excited to have a flat area to work from! More next weekend.

I am sure your life is getting much better now. Am I seeing a hole through the keel?

You are correct Fuzz, on both accounts. The holes are my only drainage currently.

Fit the aft deck up this weekend. I started with 2 sheets 1/2 meranti, glassed 1700 on one side then dry fit it. Put it all together with wood cleats then pulled it out. Glassed the underside with additional layer of 1808 0/90. Back in the boat today for fitting up of our large (20.5x46.5) gutters. I routed a recess in for the flange to sit flush. The corners and hinge recess areas get built up a bit more than the others areas so in those areas I take another 1/8” pass. Next I prime the recess with epoxy then set the gutters in wood flour putty. To be sure the gutter gasket face is in plane I run strings diagonally from corner to corner. If they just touch in the middle they are in plane. Finaflly I put a coat of epoxy on to protect the wood until it is glassed. Still have a bilge hatch to build and install. Going to use our 22x32 on that. I think I will have every size installed on this boat.

One other thing I frequently am asked about is how to drain the gutters. I will show that in a future post but the last photo is of the bilge hose running from the outer narrow fishbox gutters (14x46.5) thru the outer stringer, behind fuel tank, thru inner stringer to bilge. There will be a pump sump there that the gutters and coolers drain into so the bilge stays dry.

I am just amazed by the work you can do under a shade tree. Dang wonder what you could do working in a nice shop

Putting drain system on the aft deck gutters. On the fishbox I bedded 3/4 pvc in epoxy and wood flour then glassed it on. Once flipped I will drill 3/8 holes thru the gutter and pipe. All drains will be routed to sump
