3/4" Marine Mahogany

Post by IpswichGrady » Wed Apr 25, 2018 10:10 am

I was just checking out some Craigslist posts... the "materials" section looking for some granite rocks for a wall and I came across a sheet of supposed marine grade mahogany.... 3/4 inch. Guy wants $70. Have a few questions ...
  • how can I tell it is actually marine grade? should there be some writing on the sheet?
  • I was thinking of using it as a layer when I repair my transom.. sound ok? should be strong right?
  • can I mix wood types laminating my transom pieces... that is, mahogany and another type of marine grade plywood to get to my desired transom thickness?
Thanks

IpswichGrady, It is quite hard to tell what is real Marine Plywood and what is fake. The three best are Okoume BS1088, Meranti BS1088 and finally Meranti 6566. Both the Okoume BS1088 & Meranti BS1088 are Lloyds Certified and Stamped on each sheet. Although I have never seen a fake stamp, I have been told by others that they have seen them!! One true test is normally the cost and $70 for a sheet of good marine plywood is just too cheap!! Our Okoume 18MM (3/4) sells for $199.00, our Meranti 18MM (3/4) goes for $140.65 and these are very competitive pricing!! Be careful with this offer!! Jeff

Not worth it for a single sheet IMO. You'd need to do some serious checking to see if it's actually the right stuff. Might be worth it for a deal on a whole stack, but I don't think it's worth it for a single piece when you need to buy more anyway.

Ya I asked the CL poster about the plywood.. he didn't give me an answer... he was just very "anxious" to sell... kept asking me if I was interested. I told him I would pass. Thanks!
