D5 in Romania

Post by BogdanFerariu » Wed Apr 11, 2018 2:53 am

Hi.
I decided to build a D5, for local use, row, sail and outboard version.
I live 400 miles from the nearest sea, but a river passes behind my house, and there is a nerby lake, so I need a small boat.

This is day 1, 8 hours of work.

This must be the golden age of boat building for me, with two boats in the same time.

Day 2

I finished the interior filets, including the frames, the seams, made by 4” biaxial tape, and 9 oz cloth on the bottom and sides, between the frames, plus 2 coats of epoxy on the uncloathed plywood.
Total work time 3 hours.

Hi,
Agree one should always build 2 boats at the same time. At that speed with which you are working you will have a fleet of boats by the end of the year. Good luck with the D5 it looks very nice after only 2 days.
Greetings from Karl

Hi,
At that rate you will be sailing this weekend. You will be in the Guinness book of records for being the fastest D5 builder. Keep building and sending pictures of it, when do you find the time to take pictures ?

Hi Karl,

How is sailing in Austria? Were are you going to sail your AD14?
I have a small lake nearby, but in Romania there are just a few lakes were you can run a gas engine.
I am looking for places to go when the HM19 will be ready (and maybe a Vagabond 18 after that).
I take me almost a day to exit Romania to Hungary, but from there, I am on the highway and I can go anywere.

Day 6: installed cleats, seat tops, mast step and 2 layers of copper/epoxy, with no fairing at all on the bottom.Total work 4h, the seat top dimensions were not in my plans ( a free plan) so I had to measure them.
The next day I felt sorry about that so, on day 7 I did a light sanding on the bottom and one coat of fairing mix, and one coat of fairing mix on the inside, after filleting the seats to the hull. Total work 4.5h.
Day 8: sanding, fairing, a new coat of copper/epoxy on the bottom: 5 h
I weighed it: 33 kg, with doube transom, and light glass inside and on the bottom, and the tapes were biaxial instead of woven.
I made a test to see how it fits on my car.
So, I have to sand it one more time, paint and splash it!
