D5 Build

Post by BGinNC » Thu Nov 08, 2018 12:57 pm

This is a quick rundown on where I am on my D5 build. I started the project in February of 2018. I would like to build a larger boat, but I wanted to get my feet wet and make sure this was something I would enjoy doing before I jumped to something bigger. I wanted a cheap project where I could learn some new skills and have fun along the way. IN line with learning new skills, I'm making the sailing

The hull is Baltic Birch marine grade ply. I figured for a trial run, and wanting to be cost conscience, it couldn't hurt. Besides, this boat will probably only be in the water 10-12 times a year.

The mast I made out of a 1x8 clear yellow pine board. I ripped it into (4) 3/4"X1-5/8" strips, put a 3/8" rabbet on both sides, and glued them up into a 2"X2" blank.

It didn't take long to get the hang of working with epoxy and fiberglass.

Very nice :!: Thank you for showing it to us. What do you think it is going to weigh when finished?

Right now, I'd say it weights about 65-70 lbs. I have to flip it and add seats, mast step, hardware and interior paint. My guess I'll be pushing 90-95 lbs when complete.

Well done. It sure does look like you got the hang of fiberglass and epoxy quickly! And clearly, you have skills that are up to the job.
