PY12 - Plyak build

Post by snail » Thu Sep 07, 2017 9:06 am

I am planning to build this PY12 as a fishing Kayak. This will be my first boat build of any kind. I have managed so far to get everything marked and cut out. My first question is related to splicing the the joints for each panel. If I understand this correctly I should lay the panels down flat (outside up), sand down the joint area for thickness of 1 layer of tape, add one layer of tape, wet, then allow to dry? Do I leave the other side of the panels alone (no tape or epoxy)? Thanks in advance for any help along the way on this project. I will be posting some progress pics along the way as well.

I'll try to help, but know that I do not have the plans for that boat.

There is usually tape on both sides of a hull join, check once more through the plans and it should be there. If so, after the epoxy is set you'd flip the panel over and do the other side. The drill is to remove some material where the tape goes (optional, but it helps prevent a lump in the hull), paint some neat epoxy on the ply where the fiberglass is going to go, mix a little wood flour in some epoxy for where the panels butt against each other, align the panels, lay the fiberglass down and apply more neat epoxy just until the glass has gone clear- you don't need to flood it. Plastic under the glue joint will keep it from being glued to your work area, and weights on top will ensure that the surfaces are even.

Good luck with your build, and post lots of pictures!

Sheet 269/4 shows the lamination schedule in detail. The outside bottom is simply covered in 4 oz 50", the deck seams get tape.

Hope this helps.

Is that pressure treated plywood? It may just be the color of my monitor.

That's fine. I just wanted to make sure you weren't using something that is known to have problems! :D
