V10 - Adding the sailing bits

Post by mattkab » Thu Jul 25, 2019 4:09 pm

Years ago we constructed a V-10 to act as a rowable dinghy for our trawler. We got it completed right up to the point where it was time to paint it, and then work, life, other boat projects, and what not got in the way. And it has sat for an embarrassingly long time.

I'm about to start a new project, a GV-11 (maybe GV-13?) to act as the fishing boat and occasional dinghy for our current big boat, but I refused to start that project without finishing the project currently in the garage. I also found out that I have free storage for dinghies on some racks in our marina, and I also wanted to teach my daughter how to sail.

So I resurrected the V-10 project as a sailboat, and thus, this thread.

Shaping the centerboard and rudder:

Constructing the tiller:

Check out the foil! If that doesn't generate lift, nothing will

Giving my daughter the palm sander for a bit

More sanding and fairing

I should name this boat "Sanded". Pretty sure every inch has been sanded 5 or 6 times over

The boat will be standing on the stern, so I wanted to substantially strengthen the transom:

Glassed in:

Added some transom knees:

After fully glassing the knees and transom rail, fairing compound was added:

Fairing compound on the rudder and centerboard:

After sanding again, everything is ready for priming:

Great to see another V10 builder! Good work!
I elected to skip the sail version, as I intend to take it to areas not particularly friendly to sailboats, like narrow streams. Also, I'm old and need the exercise.
I love the boat dearly, and you will love yours. Great stuff with your daughter. Can't think of a much more wonderful activity with your kids.
