Spray rails that sweep up from the chine

Post by BrianC » Wed May 22, 2019 4:56 pm

I was at a wooden boat show a few weeks ago in Beaufort NC and saw a boat with spray rails that swept up from the chine towards the bow (see pictures) --- is there any good reason for this or is it just for looks?

I think where your spray rail is acting as a chine rail at the transom - to stop the boat slipping in corners - then it makes sense that it sweeps up towards the bow to act as a spray rail.

If that spray rail followed the chine to the bow it would be submerged where it is needed most to deflect the spray...

Not sure if that’s the right answer... but that’s my 2 cents
