A couple of attempts, finally today a successful run of this boat. If anyone builds this i would highly recommend that you build the angled transom version that is included in the plans. The first attempted launch and run did not go well. There was no way to get the motor into the proper trim position for the boat to plane and achieve any speed at all. I added a transom plate with an adjustable angle and now this boat is a little beast! Today the lake was so choppy that i almost decided against the launch. Its so light that before i got the motor started the wind had pulled the boat from the trailer and turned the boat around backwards! I decided to go for it anyway. Once this thing gets up to speed the chop is nothing! Even in the choppy waters that were made worse by a lot of boat traffic, this thing planes out quick and rides really smooth! The 15hp pushes the boat with ease. (Its rated for a 10 but i added 2 layers of matt to the bottom and braces on the floor.) I imagine that the boat would plane out easily with a smaller motor. I also think that it would easily handle a larger motor. Here's a few pics. I'll try to get some action shots and maybe some video up soon..
Congratulations on the build and getting her running like a scalded cat. Boat looks great. Perseverance pays!
Completed R13 two part nesting rowboat. ST 21 under construction .... where seeking perfection is recognized as the enemy of the good.
Yep. That's an ol merc 2 stroke. I picked it up on Craigslist for 300 bucks. The great part is it only weighs 65 pounds. That's a fraction of what some of the 15hp motors weigh.
