Yeah, I don't know how he knew about it. He was widely travelled having served 26 years in the British Army, but as far as I know he hadn't been to the USA; Belize and Jamaica being the nearest he got I think. Maybe he heard it from someone from your side of the pond. I know he was involved in conflicts and operations alongside Nato and U.N. troops so probably picked it up in a Mess somewhere and it just stuck.

I would love to see some more of the USA. Went to Florida for a couple of weeks when I was 21 and to Niagara Falls about 15 years ago but that's it so far.

Took advantage of another splendid Autumn day and went paddling for a few hours this afternoon.

Shorts and T-shirt weather; 18° (64° of yours I think) :-)

Mind you, you'll see many lads on site in shorts when it's below freezing. "Sun's out, shorts on !!!!"

Wife and Daughter wanted to go Christmas shopping today. I said "Great Idea"........... So while they trudged around the shops and I went for a paddle on the River Wey.
Three portages at locks and a 100 yd drag across a field to bypass a weir. A few fallen trees to deal with. Had to drag the boat through some gloopy mud to get round one, picked my way through the branches of another and after having a little look, took a run-up to beach myself on one before scooting over.
What a beautiful day it was too. Who'd of thunked it was England in late October ????
7.5 miles in total with 4.15 miles of that being downhill. At an easily sustainable pace, I can maintain about 3.5mph. Max speed was 5.2mph 8O
(it was a 100yd burst, followed by a drifting rest)
Went through Guildford city centre then out onto the rural navigation before returning via a meandering loop of the original course of the river.
Boat is looking pretty battered though. No doubt that a plastic one would take the abuse better but I am proud to say "I built it" when asked about it.
Always amazes me that although I live in one of the most densely populated parts of the country, within a mile or so of traffic-jams, industry and commerce, you can feel like you're somewhere unexplored.

One of the things I really appreciated about England (that’s the extent of my Europe travels) was the hard stop between city and country. It felt like a line divided the two.

A plastic hull would look just as bad. The difference is that the damage is hidden a bit better to fool the casual glance. Other than that there’s no advantage. And certainly none of the well earned pride. :)
