FS 13

Post by Sterncraft » Tue Aug 22, 2017 3:38 pm

I am building a FS 13 and have 2 days of work into a plans built boat. Very easy for a first time boat builder. I was wondering if I beef up the design and add more flotation with enclosed sides and enclosed rear deck and pontoons behind the stern all filled with flotation if the boat could handle a 9.8 HP engine. It weighs 25 lbs more than the 6HP engine and I plan to do a water test with weights on the stern and me standing back there to see how the boat acts. Just wondering if anyone has thought about making this modification.

I think that foam is standard, it is not an option.
10 HP is way too much, the boat will be difficult to control but you need the following changes:
- increase transom thickness to 3/4" ply plus glass
- pay attention to the transom knees, do a good fiberglass job there.
- use 6 mm for the bottom, not 4.

I have a flat bottom 15' 9" canoe and it needed a keel to avoid dealing with windage when solo'd. Made a big difference. Now, you wouldn't have windage, but 10 hp pushing a tiny flat bottom boat without a keel might get pretty wild. Frankly, not sure what would happen on a turn at wot.

What are you doing in the Woods section?

Good luck!
