sanding for epoxy graphite

Post by brackish » Wed Oct 29, 2014 5:49 pm

What is the appropriate final sand grit number before applying epoxy graphite? The substrate is coated with Interlux epoxy primecoat. There are a very few final fairing spots less than a couple of inches in diameter done with Quick Fair and I don't plan to do another coat of primer because of them. The interlux instructions talk about prep for their finish coats but not epoxy/graphite.

I'm ready to go with this, need to get it done before cold sets in. FS14 is the boat.

I've never used that primer, but I'd probably use 120 for that. 80 would be OK too. The epoxy/graphite will fill 80 grit just fine. I've used both, no real difference.

Thanks. One additional question. The recommended ratio's of graphite powder to epoxy resin, are they by weight or volume? I would think volume given the light weight of the powder, but thought I'd ask.

I recommend 15 to 20 percent max.

Maybe that was part of my problem. I had heard as high as 30% and ended up using 25%. But here's an odd thing: in the bottom of the pot, which CL had recommended we not use so that the lumpy stuff would settle there, it dried smooth as glass  . I think it just hates me.
