Graphite Epoxy bottom, how thick is one coat?

Yes another thickness question!
Graphite Epoxy bottom, how thick is one coat if following Larry's post?

I'm always lost when building a boat, it's when the boat is in the water, I know my way.

It will not be opaque. You want to put on, I'd say, at least 3 coats to achieve a reasonable amount of protection against scratches. Even this is far from bulletproof if you're dragging your boat over shells or gravel. I've just recently touched up a bunch of scratches which were through to the primer. I'm sure I began with at least 3 if not 4 coats of epoxy/graphite.

If you are looking for protection from bumps and abrasion I would put and extra layer of glass tape on the hull. The keel and the chines will be what takes 90% of the abuse and that is where I would add extra glass. That will do far more for you than the graphite and epoxy will. Just my opinion.

Thanks Tony and Fuzz.

I did put down a 2nd layer of tape on the cloth layup. I will put down as many coats of graphite as I can.

How long did you all wsit between coats of graphite? Did you sand between?

It's like any epoxy layup; you can work wet on wet, say another coat in 4 hours without sanding.
But I sanded between coats as I didn't achieve a very nice job on the first try, as is common. It doesn't go on like paint and it's hard to get it right. When you sand, do it wet because the dust gets everywhere and is hard to get rid of.
In the end it doesn't matter a lot because it's not going to be seen nearly as much as the topsides and will get scratched up anyway.
As Fuzz recommends, I glassed the whole bottom which is a good idea if you're dragging your boat around. Had I depended on the epoxy alone the scratches would have gone through to the wood.

Thanks Tony.

I only did the keel ridge with another layer. On my other boats I did not beach them that often. Nor run up on the oyster bars. I fish mostly on the flats, when it gets skinny I pole or paddle. Not a big fan on hitting things at a high rate of speed. When island camping, we carry a piece of carpet, just wide enough and long as the boat. Pain to carry, but has saved us a few times.

I also have a carpet and when you need it, it's the perfect thing to have. I don't carry it aboard, though, just for getting from the van to the water.

I have West System Aluminium powder on the bottom of my dinghy. Makes the surface a lot more resistant to scratches though I haven't got a long term evaluation of it yet.
