GF16 12oz versus 13oz 45/45 cloth weight difference?

Post by piperdown » Mon Jul 23, 2018 2:43 pm

Anyone know what the weight difference would be between using 12oz 45/45 biaxial fiberglass cloth versus 13oz 45/45 biaxial fiberglass cloth for a GF16?

I'm asking because I can get 13oz for $6.95 per yard (minimum 10 yards).

The difference is 1 oz.
As designed, you need 14 yards = 14 oz. extra, let's say 1lb plus same or max. twice that weight in resin = difference 3 lbs = nothing worth thinking about.
However, that 13 oz. name is weird. I am building boats professionally in the US since 40 years and never saw any glass mill producing 13 oz.

Mr. Mertens, it's Saertex 450 g/m2 (13.2 oz/yd2) Stitched Biaxial (+/-45). I rounded down.

German glass? I don't know anything about them but that price is good.

Here is the link. From a company out of Ohio. I don't know if they produce it or import it.

They are ISO certified (as is the company I work for) so their QA should be good.

Call Jeff, he may beat their price once shipping is factored in.

I will do that Mr. Merterns. Checked cost and shipping, works out to $8.45 per yard. Seems excessive at $29.95 for ground shipping.

I went on their website and the stuff looked real good so I bought 25 yards and even with the 29.95 ups shipping it worked out to $7.00 a yard. It arrived Wednesday and it looks like really good stuff. The shipment was 31.3 lbs so UPS shipping was not that bad.
Now I have to figure out something new to build to use it.
Regards
Tom
