How many ply ???

Post by bigyellowtractor » Mon Jul 03, 2017 4:19 am

I am going to build an HC12 and ordered some 6mm BS1088 from my local timber merchant. I rejected it because it was one fat central core and two really quite thin outer veneers. I have ordered some 5mm, 5-ply BS1088 from a well-respected source here but it is well over twice the price.

Should I have stuck with the cheaper stuff ??

In my head, I expect plywood (apart from cheap-sh1t, thin stuff) to be multiple and reasonably equal plies. This is why it's strong, yes ??

I am likely to build another small boat (perhaps a V12) would the cheaper stuff be ok ??

Welcome :D
You made a great decision to purchase top quality plywood to build your HC12.
Based on your description, the rejected material doesn't sound like properly manufactured BS1088.
Use the same top quality plywood to plywood to build your V12.

There have been several builders In Great Britain, one was just on here, built a FS17. Yes like Richard said stick with the good stuff. It is definitely more expensive but it will be made of several equal layers and use proper marine glue to cement them together.

As I thought chaps.

The ply that I rejected does meet Bs1088. "Each core veneer shall be no thicker than 4.8mm" and the face veneers were very nice but I just couldn't bring myself to use it.

My 24-carat, diamond-dusted, 5-ply should arrive today :D

The good stuff will have each ply pretty close to the same thickness. This helps keep the bends more uniform and fair. Of course each piece will bend slightly different but you should not notice the difference if all the layers are close to the same. We are lucky in the US that BBC keeps top quality ply that we never have to question!
