I just happened to have the Yamaha web site up when I saw your question. There is around a 100lbs difference in weight as well as the extra HP. I think 75 maybe to much I would have to run some calculations to check what top speed would be. If it would still be in the 40's you would be okay. You would probably need trim tabs to handle any porpoising or excess bow lift. It will be Friday till I can run any calculations. If you can find what the top speed was on his boat it would help.

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply! I have found a marine engineers who have a couple of mariner/mercury 60hp engine's. One in pretty good condition which I think I'll end up going. Not massively heavier than a 50 either. I wouldn't worry about the calculations for the 75hp. Although I really appreciate the help!
