Carbon poles/windscreen

Post by fallguy1000 » Sat Jan 27, 2018 4:53 am

Has anyone built anything out of carbon fiber?

I was thinking it'd be really fun if I made poles for my windscreen from carbon fiber. The only tricky bit is they need to have some 316ss snaps in them and they need to fit into each other and be detachable.

Will carbon fiber take a screw?

I will add a drawing later.

These would be super cool to build; check out the price. I might be getting off track, but these are carbon with hardware...I can't find carbon boat pieces like poles or posts or windscreens.

Yes, builders have used carbon fiber for masts and poles. Do a search for "carbon fiber poles" or "carbon fiber masts."
I don't know about windscreens.

I wanted to update this thread. I spoke with Ewen Thomson who does lightning consults on boats/yachts/etc. And carbon is a conductor that is not bondable.

There will be no carbon being used on my boat, despite the novelty of it.

You can use carbon and pretty much anything will bond to it.

Creative use of 4 or 6 oz fiberglass can shield any electrical current and is transparent if done correctly. You’d also want to use fiberglass between any metal it comes in contact with to prevent corrosion. All easy stuff.

Here’s a 1” hollow spare I’m making for a wood paddle. To make this carbon all you’d need is a 2” sleeve of carbon from Soler Composites, and then a second fiberglass sleeve to use as the outer layer. You’d never see it and it would shield the conductivity of the carbon.

Not bondable means can’t solder grounds to it!
