Bilge Opt-Out

Post by tobolamr » Sat Dec 13, 2014 12:28 pm

I'm wondering if the Bilge can be something that can be removed from view for folks? Maybe make it a thing where you get the Bilge by default and can opt to have it removed if for some reason it isn't good for you?

I used to run a forum like this and I knew it was possible back in the early 00's, so it should be do-able now, too, right?

I like the Bilge and some of the goofier things that go on in there. But maybe there are others who are being influenced away from the whole forum AND Bateau from things posted in there? So if they want, they can just ask to have the Bilge removed from their access.

Shouldn't be difficult, would it?

Thanks!

I agree. It would be nice if they didn't show up in the new posts selection.

That is strange, I never see the new posts in the Bilge.
I'll look into it.

I don't see that but then, I use the bateau2 index page to see the new posts.
What do you use to list the new posts?
Do you sue the newsfeed?

I will disable news feed for that one but really, when I go through the check out at the supermarket, I see magazine titles that I find very stupid or even repugnant but I don;t think to much about it.

OK, I disabled the newsfeed for the BIlge forum.
I will now post a very offensive message :D  with the title "a very offensive message".
Please tell me in a few minutes if you see that message.

I still see it when I click on "View new posts".
I'll try a little more but it may have to wait until Monday.

I may have to create a new user group that can not see the Bilge . . .

I am not going to delete it, there is enough self censorship around the Internet but I'll see what I can do to hide those offending titles.
Remember, we created the Bilge to allow people to vent about things not exactly boat related.
I for example, several times wrote tirades against taxes and regulations that affect boating but this often degenerated in political arguments.
Same for climate change. We start debating the merits (or virtues?) of electrical propulsion and after 3 messages, we may find our self arguing about Al Gore. That is when the discussion moves to the Bilge. That's where Al Gore belongs anyway , oops, sorry. :D
You see how easy it is?

Once something becomes political or religious or just controversial, we can move it to the Bilge. No need for censorship.
Nobody is forced to read the Bilges. It's like TV: there is stuff on there that I can not stand. I simply don't watch it.

I rarely read the Bilge but the JOTD (Joke Of The Day) is worth reading. I almost never post there. I have strong opinions but don't want to debate them here.

Anyway, I"ll try a little more but we may have to wait until Monday for the webmaster to do surgery . . .

Jacques, that post offended the heck out of me. You got to quit acting like that

Instead of an opt-out, if it really bothers people tempted to open something that they don't want to read, how about an opt-in?
Geez.....If you don't want to read it, don't click on it. We don't really need a moderator to take care of that, do we :?:
