D4, Dimensions Side/Bottom Panel do not match

Post by anonymous » Mon Jan 12, 2004 1:46 pm

This is my fist message on this board.
First of all I would like to say hello to everybody and pay my respect to all those boat builders who built such beautiful boats.

I am building a scale model of the D4 to the free plans I have downloaded from this site.
I have a problem matching the length of the Bottom Panels to the Side Panels.
I think that according to the dimensions on the drawing, the Bottom Panels are simply too long.
Please refer to PANELS.PCX
Just compare the length of the chine on both the Bottom and the Side Panels:
The length of the Bottom Panel parallel to the CL is 7’-2 5/8”
The length of the chine on the side panel is 7’-5 7/8” minus 6” = 6’-11 7/8”
This means that the length measured parallel to the CL is 7’-2 5/8” minus 6’ 11 7/8 = 2” 5/8 too long. (I hope that one day soon your guys go metric!)
OK, I realize that the chine is a three dimensional curve which is a common line on both parts, but this does not make up for the difference above. This is also the difference in size I measured form my scale model.
Is there something wrong with the drawing? Did I misread a dimension due to the poor legibility of the low resolution file?

After a couple of thousand D4's built in more than 10 years, I believe that the dimensions must be correct.
I know there is a small mistake in the daggerboard trunk location but not in the hull panels.
The very old PCX files are difficult to read but we sell very detailed and accurate plans of the new version, the D5 :)

And the D5 plans are available in metric!

By the way the number looks like 7'-8 7/8" to me - not 7'-5 7/8".

Thanks Ralph
you are right, when I look at the drawing again it's an 8 instead of a 5
The 3 extra inches will do the job.
I am glad that I only made a paper model.
Jacques: I will buy detailed drawings when I get back on wood.
I did not expect to get a response so soon, this is very encouraging for my future plans
