Transom foam

Post by jacquesmm » Thu Jul 02, 2015 5:11 pm

After several weeks of testing, we have decided to add to our list of materials a new transom foam:

We'll post pictures and videos later but you will not believe how strong it is.
While lighter than plywood, we literally attacked a sandwich sample with a 30 lbs sledge hammer and could not break it or separate the glass laminations from the core.

It cost less than Coosa or other foams and it can be machined, cut etc. just like plywood.
One very nice feature is high screw retention. For the installation of small hardware, unlike other foams, there is no need to use backing plates.

Jacques -

I'll be interested to see how (or if) this applies as a replacement or augment material for existing designs?

It makes sense to use it on foam sandwich boats.
Foam sandwich is an option shown on the plans for some of my designs but almost any of my designs can be built in foam sandwich.
Currently, we have a GF16 entirely built in foam sandwich in our shop but I don;t have time to create an online tutorial.

Would it be a better choice for a large bulkhead in place of H80 ?
