Guys,

Quick question:

Do you have to use biaxial tape on the puzzle joints or will the glue be enough strength until i glass over?

I haven't used the puzzle joints, but we've been told the joints with glue don't need tape- they'll hold until getting glassed over.

I taped mine. Mostly because I didn't know what the heck I was doing and messed them up! If you do tape them you will have a bit of fairing to do. Here's the official word from the BBC How-To section: Puzzle Joint

It depends on the boat. Some are completely glassed, in that case, no tape but some are only glassed to the waterline and for those, use tape.

Is Gel Magic the preferred glue for Puzzle Joints?

I used MarinEpoxy with slow hardener mixed with wood flour. All from BBC.

I first wet out the joint, then used the wood flour mix. You may need to force the mix in to the cuts joints. I did this on both boat builds.

Bob.

Thanks, Cap’n B.

I’m not buying the mother pod of epoxy at once, but will order my way through the build as I go. Budget constraints...

So, here at the beginning, I’m putting together an order to get started with laminating the transom, and glueing up the stringers.

Gel Magic for the transom, and more typical epoxy for the puzzle joints. I have some from Total Boat left after a recent project, and will use that with some wood flour.
