BS1088 Indonesian Marine Ply

Post by PaulMcClure » Wed Sep 03, 2003 10:01 am

I'm about to start building a C17 and have been shopping around for good prices on marine ply. I've just been given a good quote from a local supplier (other quotes have been 50% higher) but he can't tell me if it's okoume or meranti or whatever. All he knows is that it's BS1088 marine and it's from Indonesia.

Should it be safe enough to buy this stuff?

The ply i am using is probably the same stuff the stamp on it says bs1088 seal brand marine ply it is pinkish in colour and i intend using it for the OD18.i have been practising on my existing boat by using the ply to re-floor the boat and fit seats and so far it seems ok to work with.

cheers....james.

I believe it said in the Wooden Boat magazine that the Meranti was the wood from the Indonesia. As long as its British Standard, it ought to be the right stuff.

Excellent. Looks like I'll be ordering it. It's a good bit cheaper than other stuff I'd looked at. Now if I could only get the same kind of deal of epoxy and glass....

DrBones:

But rec-collect what the article said about Asian plywood that acquired the BS1088 stamp between the mill and the retailer.

Paul
I will probably built a boat in Indonesia in the near future.
I stumbled over you message and am curious to know about your experience with the Indonesian plywood so far.
