I would actually prefer option #1 as well. I can spend some time poking around down there when I'm coming and going. Off the top of my head, the previously mentioned Camp N Water campground (with campsites and rental "cabins") is probably a good option. They have a private boat ramp, canal, and dockage along the canal. The other places like Macraes and nearby have plenty of facilities, but I'm quite certain their dockage is right on the river. Since Ken is a local, perhaps he could give some intel on the lodging options.

Ditto - the more people in one location the better. stumbling distance is preferred over driving distance.

Just a few places to ponder:

http://www.riversideresorts.com/index.html
(would not be my first choice...there's a lot going on here with the hotel, restaurant, bar, etc....lots of people traffic)

Mcrae's looks like it has everything we are looking for.
Has anyone who is watching this thread actually overnighted there?

I know nothing about the Homosassa area, seems like when I was a kid on a family vacation we took a glass bottom boat ride there and saw some huge catfish. Leaving this one up to yall who know. Mrs. Cracker and I aint staying in no tent though  I also vote for a place where all the people and boats can be in one place.

I've been some time there in a rental house, but have never stayed at any of the places I listed. Otherwise, I've been to Homosassa a bunch, just haven't overnighted. The house we stayed at was right next to the campground, and even though it was scallop season, it was nice and quiet. The most noise was all the people shucking scallops with a shop vac :D In fact, you had to drive through the edge of the campground to get to the house.

Larry, where's your adventurous side??

Of the 3 places listed, they're all real close together. Macraes and Riverside Resort are actually right next door to each other. I suppose that if you're staying at either of those places, you just as well have access to the other. The campground is about 5 minutes away by car, but you could almost throw a rock to it from Macraes and idle there by boat very quickly.

Of course, every place has its negative. I've seen the inside of the cabins at Macraes, and they resembled a well used fish camp. Their website says all have been renovated, so it would be worth taking another look. I don't know about the dock access though. They have plenty of dockage, but they also have plenty of rental boats there which take up a lot of room. The last negative I can think of with Macraes is that the boat ramp there is probably the most used in the area. Its free and tight, which can lead to hours of delightful drinking and observing (as alluded to by Ken). Still, it could be the best place to fit our needs.

I don't know many cabins the campground has that would actually be decent to stay in. I think they have some that are nice, and some that aren't.

I'll make a point of getting over there within the next couple of weeks and checking it out. Macraes could be an excellent first option.

I have boated and fished on the Homosassa River and the nearshore flats several times but I have never spent the night there.
It's got plenty of rocks and oyster bars like Hudson, Aripeka, Chassahowitska and Crystal River.
The grass flats are way more lush up that way than where I live.
It's a very pretty river...But it is fished HARD. That said, we always loaded up on trout when we fished there.
