Just a few points to clarify ks8..... the 17.6lbs is off the Dwyer web site for the mast. I did not include any weights apart from the mast weights as they are essentially the same, regardless of which mast you choose. The other point I need to clarify is that the weights I was talking about is total, so 17.6 for alu and 26.5 for the wood. Of course tapping that difference as a solid weight to the middle of the mast would cause serious issues, but when you spread it out over the lower 10ft you will find it does not affect it nearly as much. The same issue would apply for the taper as the heavier portion would be lower, with it being roughly the same as the alu at top (will need to confirm of course....hard to do the math on the taper). I am not at all deniying that the wooden mast would be heavier and that would need to be taken into account, but I think with the boat being a little heavier (going to be glassing it) I think it should be ok.

Others say nothing gambled nothing gained,
Go all out for your dream.
Life can be lived either way, but for me,
I'd rather try and fail, than never try at all, you see."

Keep us updated. :)

Maybe revisit the mast question to Jacques when the mast is finished and you have actual final numbers? His comments helped my confidence as I built.

KS8 is right, the mast weight difference will probably be insignificant.
