Re: FS 18... new builder
Fyshy tell the guys how you plan to use the boat the most and you will get some good advice on boat choice. But in the end it is your boat so build what you want. I might add to take boat building advice from SeaSlug as if it came down from the mountain. He has built several amazing boats, in fact BBC bought one to use as a show boat.

Fuzz,
I live on Guntersville Lake so most of my fishing is bass fishing. Several times a year I go to Florida for redfish. My favorite is shallow water fly rod fishing so the Gheenoe works fine. I have always enjoyed rigging my boats and tinkering with them more than actually fishing so I do look forward to the process. The FS18 probably would most closely fit my needs but the other designs are attractive too. I also want to consider if any of the builds are simpler than the others being that this is my first build.
Thanks
Neal

Another consideration is how many people you'll have on board most of the time. From my personal experience, if you plan on fishing alone or with 1other person, the FS18 will be fine, but it will feel too crowded with a third angler, so you'd be better off going for the LM18 or the FS17 low sheer. All 3 will have the same level of skill needed, just a difference in the amounts of materials. If you plan on taking the entire extended family along, than the XF20 is the boat you'll want. In fact bring the entire family and a few friends, the XF20 is a big platform.
Re: FS 18... new builder
Yes, the XF20 caught my eye for that reason... though I usually fish with just 1 other angler, I now have grandkids and the XF20 looks like it would be perfect for the lake we live on.
Sounds like I need to build 2 boats...

0utstanding I say!!! 2 boats it is then. Hell, why not 3 while you're at it? Hurry and buy plans before you change your mind, we have an insatiable appetite for boat porn.

I hear you loud and clear Seaslug... I have spent the entire day at work in my warehouse transforming it into a boat-building workshop. I even swept the floor.

I have found an electric leaf blower to be invaluable for quick clean up (as long as you secure any papers or light objects)
