Fuzz, there are basically three chambers

P&S sides average
8” deep
17” wide
12’ long

Center average
44” wide
16” deep
12’ long

That’s a lot of foam. Wonder how much?

P&S 14,700 cu. in.
Center 76,000 cu. in.

Not sure how much a gallon expands.

Thanks, So if I am reading the 2 gallon kit correctly there is

1728 cubic inches per cubic foot, 2 gallon kit covers approximately 8 cubic feet (13824 cubic inches)
P&S would take a little over 4 gallons, two plus per side
Center would take approximately six gallons

Weight is two pounds per cubic foot, so approximately 160 lbs. of weight added to the boat :help:

Should wrap up stringers in the next couple days, before moving forward I need some recommendations on the hull stiffeners that were rotted and removed as pictured

These pieces 3” wide 3/4 thick when removed were only taped to hull no glue,

In your opinion,

1. Should they be reinstalled, if so would foam work or ply?
2. Should they be bonded to hull with thickened epoxy prior to glassing?

Reason for asking about foam or ply, in the center section they have to conform to the curvature in the hull. Open to suggestions. Will be next step, thanks

Buy a piece of 2" r10 xps for 25 bucks at HD and some 36 grit floor paper in the rental shop.

Cut the pieces about the same or so like 4" wide to fit or to fit glass scraps. Sand the heck out of them and radius the top edge and cabosil all around and tape in with glass scraps, or do zilch and use float foam.

Each two gallon kit gives you about 480 pounds of flotation if you get full expansion. Fiberglass is just a little heaver than water so the wood in your hull will just about offset the glass. In the stern with the motor and some other stuff you will have maybe 500 pounds. So one kit back there. Nice to keep the bow floating so maybe one there. One more just to make you fill good where ever it best fits. So three two gallon kits should keep her afloat if swamped. If you put pluggable limber holes below deck you will have a lot more. Biggest problem is how to make sure she will float upright and stay that way.
I just do not know about those little scabbed on hull braces. Is the hull really floppy without them? I am sure they put them there for a reason but if they were run on edge and run sideways to tie into the stringers they would do a lot more good. :doh:

Thanks fallguy and Fuzz, I’m stuck on whether to add the stiffeners back. In the forums opinion, Would the foam make the hull rigid and act as the stiffeners?

I could fill the outer chambers and partially fill the center.

The original floatation was just pieces of foam thrown in the bottom.

I think if you put a few transverse frames in and float foam, that would be best. You get some insirance against the hull ever getting wonky on you and a stiffer floor on top. I am not a foam fan, but see the need here. I just like it limbered. You can do that with some of that cheap plastic gutter and limbers in any transverse framing. Seal them with thixo or a small bit of foam before you foam the holes so the foam doesn't get into the channels. The gutters would go along the lowest points in the hull to a bilge pump well.

I never trust the idea water won't get below.

Fallguy, are you saying run the gutters length wise of the hull bottom (stern to bow).

I believe that I would cut up some of that extra 1/2" ply, glue it down, tape it to the sides and stringers, glass it in, then foam it. I'd put it back similar to the way the factory did it, but better. I'd also add a few more, spacing them closer together, because the ply is thinner than the original stiffeners.

What is that hole at the bottom of the pic, the green line goes thru it. It appears to be a terrible gouge in the hull, made with a chisel??? How deep is it? It appears to be an inch, and is it in the hull; tabbing; some type of foam; or what?
