Re: Crabby Patti2 C17
It seems very similar to taping drywall; I suppose someone has brought that up before. I am trying to put on as little faring as I can and keeping it as smooth as I can to avoid much sanding. I’d rather do it many easy sanding jobs than a few thick ones. We will see.....dome with my own fairing mix. Sand tomorrow and then Quickfair.

I agree, many similarities between fiberglass tape/fairing and drywall, also plastering. The pros apply the compound smoothly so there's practically no sanding, the beginners make a lumpy mess and there's no end of dust and labor.

Re: Crabby Patti2 C17
I am trying to figure out the best time to place the spray rails and rubrail; Seems that it would be easier to Quickfair, and long board the sides and bottom without these rails. I will need to fill and fair the joint between hull and spray rail however, so if I fair the bottom first, then I will need to dress up the spray rail joint......anyone have advice?

If you are able I would fair first. The rubrails sure get in the way.

Rubrails aren’t too much of a problem, but spray rails and strakes do get in the way. The area of the hull under the rubrail doesn’t really need a lot of smoothing because you are adhering the rubrail to it and covering it up. Applying glass over the rubrail or a fillet on the underside further negates the need.

Thanks all; I will fair out the bottom then put in spray rail. Seems like any longboarding will be easier without the spray rail on. I think I am going to miss sanding......

Back at it after a lousy bout with the flu. DIY steam box worked great for the spray rails.
