Biaxial tape vs woven?

Post by Nnimrod » Wed Mar 13, 2019 1:19 pm

For an HC14, the plans specify "9 oz, 4" wide woven tape". The page describing the epoxy and fiberglass kit says "6 oz, 6" wide biaxial tape".

I'm planning on using 6 oz woven because I already have it, that's going to be fine, right? It's a canoe, it's not under tremendous loads. If it's not fine I won't use it.

Use whatever you have for that small boat.
Years ago, 6 oz. biaxial did not exist and I specified 9 oz. because it was very common and just as cheap as 6 oz. woven.

6 oz biaxial is stronger than 6 oz woven. The 6 oz woven is basically a 3 oz tape for strength as the 0 degree strands offer no strength.

I am not Jacques, so I don't know if a 3 oz equivalent tape is sufficient, but I would build to spec.
